Type the two numbers from your cuff and see which range they fall in, and what to do next.

SYS is systolic, the first number. DIA is diastolic, the second.

NormalSYS below 120 and DIA below 70
ElevatedSYS 120 to below 135, or DIA 70 to below 85
HypertensionSYS 135 or higher, or DIA 85 or higher

How the result is classified

From the 2024 European guideline and the 2025 US guideline. A range is not a diagnosis.

Which matters more, systolic or diastolic?

Both count. A reading falls into the higher range of its two numbers, so 118 over 88 is hypertension under the US guideline even though the systolic value is normal. Systolic pressure often becomes a more important risk factor after the age of 50.

Does my age change the ranges?

The categories shown here do not change with age, so there is no age field. Your personal treatment target may be different, particularly if you are older or have another health condition.

Why are the European and US ranges different?

Both read the same numbers, but the US guideline splits hypertension into two stages and starts stage 1 at 130 or 80. The European guideline calls that band elevated and starts hypertension at 135/85 at home.
